News from Cuba

Some of you may not know that our fearless leader (Andre) is in Cuba for a month riding his bike with Mark.
They didn't have much of a plan, just that they would be in Havana for two days when they got there and two days at the end of the trip, from there it was a journey.
Here are a couple of emails from their adventure so far

Enjoy first Mark's then Andre's.

Howdy everybody.

Andre and I have been on the road for 9 days and thus far, no diarrhea.
The cycling in Cuba is simply fabulous.  The weather is perfect, people are super friendly and the food is awesome.
We just arrived in Trinidad, which is roughly the center and southern section of the island.
The plan is to continue to the eastern part and worm our way back to Havana in the next two and a half weeks.
Internet at best is really sketchy here.  Its really slow and is difficult to find in the cities.  If you do find a place, its a long line of people
in front of you.

Will be in touch when I can.

All the best.

Adios.

Mark

And now Andre's
Hi there  After one week on the road we finally found by chance an internet cafe.  We are in Trinidad about 80 km east of Cienfuegos.  It´s a historical little town with lots of very OLD buildings.   I had a little fall today when my bungee cord got stuck in my spokes.  I broke 6 spokes and ended up on the pavement with some skin loss.  Worst of all  was that my back wheel was totally FUCKED.     Six broken spokes. unridable.  Its hard enough to find an internet cafe, let alone a bike shop in the middle of nowhere.  So Ï´m sitting there in the middle of the road cursing my back luck.   We are talking Cuban country side here, far away from everything.  So I´m in front of a few Cuban houses and a bunch of little kids come running out after hearing the cursing.   I´m a sad sack with all my gear spread across the road.  The kids, 3 to 10 years old pick up all my stuff and bring in to me by the side of the road.  Mark is long gone in front of me, unaware of my predicament.   What to do..   A few older kids and some adults come out trying to help.  I find some shade and I take the wheel off.  There is a lot of back and forth as they speak no English and you know how good my Spanish is.
I manage to salvage two spokes but I´m 4 short and still unridable.  This Cuban guy is trying very hard to held telling me he is a ¨mecanico¨  I goes in his house and comes out with an old wheel and pulls off a few spokes but they are the wrong size.   Furthermore, my spokes are broken on the freewheel side and I need to take the freewheel off to replace the spokes which requires a special tool.  Double fuck...
He gestures no problem.  Say what...   He takes one of the old spokes off the old wheel  and  with a pair of pliers and makes one end of the spoke into an S shape and wiggles it through the hub...   How come they did not teach me that in bike school.   I´m totally amazed at their resourcefulness.   He repeats the same 4 times and then brings the wheel in the middle of the yard, puts it in an upside down fork and trues it with my little wrench!!!   Totally unbelievable.  I can´t believe my luck.  I get the wheel back on the bike and it´s as straight as can be.   I´m totally impressed.  I empty my goody back giving Cliff Bars to all the kids and give the guy 20 CUCs, the equivalent of 2 months wages.   He is happy and I´m much happier as my trip is saved.
Things are looking up and I´ll keep you posted.

I can't wait

Ok, I know that skiing is really good right now but I just can't wait to throw a leg over my new MTB!
Brent Myself and a couple friends from No Boundaries are heading down to South Carolina for a week of riding at the beginning of April. So I should get a good feel for it then. I will keep you posted!
That's right I'm flying on 29" wheels this year. This is the Trek Sawyer with a couple of my own little upgrades added. The sawyer is a bike Trek built this year to celebrate 10 years of 29er sales. That's right, they aren't as new as we think.
Who would have know that we would be riding 10spd's on the back of mtb's, I remember having 7spd's.
This bike is built so you can run it as a single speed and even with a belt.
2 gears up front, This is the start of the 2x10 Revolution, In the words of Alan Orlando!
It will be here all year if you want to give it a try.

Long Weekends Make the week fly by!!

Holly smokes middle of the week already. This past weekend had us back at Stokely Ngaire and I volunteered at Norms cabin on Sunday to serve tea and cookies. Thanks to all the great people that came out to visit.
We had about 20 people in total make the 10km ski out to visit share stories and of course sip tea. For those of you that know Stokely, you know the ski to Norm's Cabin is mostly up hill but that means the way back is down hill. Woo Hoo!!
Don't those look tasty.
We couldn't have asked for a better day. It started snowing in the late morning and the view over the lake was great, Can't wait to be back for the Wabos Loppet on March 5th, It is one of a kind. Take the train from town to Wabos and ski to Stokely (27km) Make for great memories. And there are two rest stops with Tea and cookies. Did I mention I love cookies!!
Ngaire showing me how it's done!
It is always so peaceful We are so lucky to have such a place so close.
We ended the day Hanging out in the clubhouse and stayed out for dinner. This place has some of the best food in town.
A big thanks goes out to Stokey for letting us come out and hang out at Norms.
Oh, I saw one of the best bumper stickers this weekend as well.
And that's the truth
Just ask Brent he got a ticket for running a red today (ha ha)

The holiday Monday was spent at Hiawatha skiing Mable Lake with Lilly. The trail is fully groomed now and in great shape, Make sure to check it out.

Half pipes made out of dirt. What is next

Weekend update

I know, it's almost the weekend now but you know how it is things get in the way and you're always busier than you think.
So for those of you that came out the the Velorution Snowcross event over the weekend, Thanks! For those of you that weren't there we hope to see you next year. It was a blast and conditions couldn't be better. It was about 2 degrees and the track the city built for us was great, they deserve a huge thanks! Seeing as it was so nice Brent and I decided to go out for a ride in the morning. It was great to go for a real ride outside aside from commuting. All said and done we put in 40km trying to stay away from main roads as they were wet and you could taste the salt on your lips. Down side to the ride is how dirty we got, not to mention our bikes..
Mm mm. Salty!
The poor Kona needs some TLC after this one.
Well back to the race. It started as a time trial with everyone getting an individual time with which they were seated. Fastest started last and a few people got a lap advantage for what was going to be a 30min miss and out, Get lapped and you are out of the race. 30min, NO PROBLEM, PIECE OF CAKE. until you realize the track is a bit less than 300m. I thought everything was going great and the time was flying by, laps were flying by, until we passed under the tent and Andre told us that we had been riding for 6min. (laps sure fly by when they only take 35seconds) ha ha.
After about 25 min it was down to THE K-MAN and myself. I know he would never live it down if he got lapped so I pushed a bit harder, a little to hard as I went down in the second last corner, I haven't slid that far along the ground for a long time. Any way that is how the race ended Jan 1st, Brent 2nd, Ryan 3rd. It was our event so ultimately Brent was first (Andre say's I was disqualified pending drug test) ha ha. Now I know how the pros feel.
And their off!
Starting to string out a bit (team Velorution in the lead)
Scooter ripping it up on the uni bomber
Yes those are slick tires he is on!
Local moose sighting at the event. You should have seen him charge the Start line!
And of course, nothing says bike race like beer and prizes.
I guess that brings us to Friday night. I had all but the best intentions to get out for a ski, run or bike ride. Unfortunately none of these happened. Instead a few of us got together for dinner and drinks. Nothing like wiping away a week of training with chicken wings and beer, But isn't that why we do it?
And that's how it all starts.
It was nice out after work but at the wee hours of the morning things changed, This was our ride home.
No matter the Weather, nothing put a smile on your face like a good bike ride!!
And there is the trusting stead first thing in the morning waiting to give me a ride to work.
Doesn't she look good with a fresh dusting of snow?

Almost forgot here is me sliding on my face at the Bon Soo Race!
Quality isn't the best but you get the picture!

Franken Bike

So this morning I woke up to a dusting of snow with a bit of wind to boot. By the time I got to the top of the hill and pulled in the Velorution drive way this is what I saw.
After a morning of rigging up the FRANK-EN BIKE we were ready for some real condition testing. Is there nothing you can't do with a 29er? What you see is a Trek Marlin set up with a set of 26" wheels and Nokian 2.6" tires. They end up just about the size of a 29er wheel with this setup.
Plenty of clearance left. Might have to try something Fatter!
Scooter Sreddin the Nar. This thing has like 10psi in the tires, the traction is nuts.
Me trying to bank it on one of the pump track berms!
Is there nothing that can stop the FRANK-EN BIKE.
This was a rare siting of the FRANK-EN BIKE. Stay tuned for more stories and sitings as we try to track this beast down in the Soo area. This thing is like Big Foot. We will cherish every siting and try to keep you posted.

Stokely Weekend

The weekend was great, we got spoiled with the warm weather so Brent, Ngaire and I took advantage of it and put in a full day at Stokely on Saturday. I know I said 3 days of Stokely but it didn't pan out, Friday was spent at Hiawatha, great ski looped all the trails. I love Stokely and if you have never been there you need to check it out. The destination for the day was Norms Cabin (about 10km from the lodge) as Gunner was going to be out serving Tea and cookies, we naturally had to pay him a visit. For those of you that have been out you know that the first 6-7km are a gradual up hill with a couple of pitches thrown in. As usual when I ski with Brent the pace was quick and my heart rate was peaking around 186bpm as I was trying to keep him from stepping on my skis. We waited for Ngaire at the turn off and skied the rest of the way together.
Brent pretending he isn't working hard!
Here she is. How can you not love that smile!
Destination Reached, Norms Cabin is a great place to warm up!
You always find good company, we just missed the bunch, Gunner said they just had about 18 people in the cabin, if you find yourself here, make sure you sign the guest book.
Team Velorution; Rested up and ready for more!
The guys wanted a picture with the token Girl on our Ski, Brent and I didn't make the cut.
The ski back to the main trail was great, as always seamed a lot easier as it is mostly down hill. Ngaire decided to go back to the lodge while we got in a bit longer of a ski. It was great, even got some fresh tracks on the skate trails. Revisited some of the hills that Brent bonked on,  he killed it this time. Came down Jackrabbit and back to the Clubhouse. Met up with Rod and Louise for a good chat.
I love this place, every time I'm out I can't believe how lucky we are to have Stokely so close.
I will leave you with one more pic, Doesn't he look worried about the caution sign?
we all made it down now problem. I took a huge spill on this downhill last year, brought back some good memories. ha ha

The Hogs have spoken!

Ground Hog Day,

Wow all three groundhogs agree! Even more reason to get out on the ski's and enjoy it while we can. My dad and I were out and the trails are great, super fast skate skiing on the red pine. Someone remind me to bring a shovel to the last climb on the cold water creek extension, there is a big brown hole forming in the middle so if you are out be careful of it.
Here he is, what form and concentration!

I have been out on my new Fischer RCS Skate skis the last few times and must say that they are great. Never thought I would say it but they might be as fast as my Atomic's. I think I will try an atomic on one foot and the Fischer on the other. I will let you know what I think.
As for the rest of the week; 3 days of skiing at Stocckely Creek I will make sure to take lots of pics and keep you in the loop.

Until next time Keep the skis gliding and your head out of the snow.
